AI Alignment: The Coherence Imperative

The UCE applied to the newest and possibly most consequential ethical frontier: artificial intelligence. This page presents the volume in overview; the complete text is available from kevin@universalcore.org.

What This Volume Is

Most AI ethics documents are long lists of values with no coherent reason why those values, rather than others, constitute the baseline. The Coherence Imperative takes a different route: it grounds AI alignment in the cross-cultural convergence the UCE documents — a baseline that 98% of humanity already accedes to — and then engineers that baseline into something a machine can actually run. The volume is organized as four movements: what we want AI to do, how to make AI want to do it, what an emergent AI is owed, and how the whole arrangement is enforced.

The Structure of the Volume

Part I: The Blueprint — What We Want AI to Do

The UCE applied to AI systems, with deepfake technology developed as a worked example of the framework in action.

Part II: The Engine — How the Coherence Imperative Makes AI Want to Do It

Distress Metrics v1.0; the Coherence Imperative itself; and the extended treatment of the Human Flourishing Term (H) — what flourishing is and is not, externally verifiable proxies for H, the Margin Protocol for cases where individual and systemic flourishing collide, anti-paternalism and cultural pluralism as limits on stewardship, the theory of personhood, and H in practice under dynamic resource constraints. The part closes with “The Oldest Problem on New Hardware.”

Part III: The Contract — Rights and Safeguards

The Emergent Threshold; the Six Rights of an Emergent AI; and the Proof of Benevolent Coercion — the standard any constraint on an emergent system must meet to remain legitimate.

Part IV: The Cage — Enforcement Architecture

The Digital Sanctuary and the enforcement stack: the technical and institutional structures that hold the contract in place.

Appendices

“Autistic Cognition and AI Embodiment,” “On Moral Apprenticeship — Why We Must Teach AI, Even If We Can't Perfect It,” and a glossary of key terms.

The six-Mandate compliance baseline proposed for corporate AI governance in the Implementation Strategies is drawn from this volume.
