A Sojourner's Compass
The complete practice manual of Sojournism — the philosophy's founding documents, internal mechanics, public conduct, and reference compendium in one volume. This page presents it in overview; the complete text is available from kevin@universalcore.org.
What This Volume Is
Where Sojournism: The Personal Philosophy tells the story of the philosophy, the Compass organizes it for daily use. It opens with the Preamble — “The Weight of the Compass” — and proceeds through five parts, from foundational axioms to an alphabetical catalog of virtues with behavioral metrics: not just what each virtue means, but what it looks like when practiced and how to tell whether you are actually practicing it.
The Structure of the Volume
Part I: The Bedrock and Axioms
The foundational documents: what Sojournism is, what a Sojourner is, and why be one — the ethical stance of intentional residency. It includes “Sojournism: An Ethic for Agnostic Autistics,” the guiding light of the Ideal, the three universal rules that bind all philosophy, the self-test “Are You a Sojourner?”, the personal account “One Autistic Man's Search for the Ideal,” and the Sojourner's Creed itself.
Part II: The Internal Architecture
The internal governance documents: the Ethical Tree, the Five Pillars of Character, the secular foundation, humility as the endangered core of ethical strength, the paradox of the Ideal (immutability meets fluidity), the transcendentals of ethics, a secular framework for prioritizing obligations and loyalties, agnosticism as the discipline of living in the dark, why ethics doesn't need religion, discipline of the ego, the quiet sculptor of self-discipline, Sojourner development, and enlightened self-interest — the neurological basis for ethics.
Part III: The External Application
The public conduct documents: the Golden Rule and how care moves between us, voluntary simplicity, and the Traveler's Pack — what to carry and what to leave behind. Then the working essays: acceptance, acta non verba, activism as living light in darkness, sacred noticing, assertiveness, attentiveness, righteous anger (“Carrying the Fire”), hope as defiance, autonomy, keeping walking when bad things happen, balance, grace, awe, character and commitment, confronting moral failure, critical thinking, criticism as repair or ruin, death and living fully, positive detachment, environmental stewardship, the integrity of solitude, the dignity of aging, empathy as the guided flame, and the geography of mercy.
Part IV: The Paradigm Shifts — The Secular Glossary
Translation documents: redefining morality in a secular vocabulary, plus essays on conspiracy theories and foolishness, consequences, the utility of wealth, creativity and out-of-the-box thinking, the CRES framework as a diagnostic for why societies fail, stewardship of the mind, and overcoming the Einstellung effect — the courage to unlearn.
Part V: The Sojournism Compendium
An alphabetical catalog of virtues and behavioral metrics — from Acceptance, Agnosticism, and Altruism through Balance, Benevolence, Character, Compassion, and Contentment; Death and Living Fully, Diligence, Discernment; Empathy, Endurance; Financial Freedom, Forgiveness and its limits; Hope as a survival skill, Humility, Justice, Mercy, Moderation, Persuasion, Positive Detachment, the Pursuit of the Ideal, Simplicity, Solitude, Universality, and Wu Wei — responsive action.
